I took my tempest down this week to do some yard yard and was shocked to see how dirty it was.

I would think this is effecting is accuracy.

How do you clean it? I assume soap and cleaning agents would be harmful to the sensors.

I’ve uploaded pictures.

Suggestions?

be careful if you clean the gap between the top part and the main part. There is some special coating there. For the rest I would use a damp cloth and I think a bit a soap should be fine as you are only cleaning plastic.

If my station was in that condition, I would clean it with a Rinseless Wash typically used to clean/detail automobiles. I’m a big fan of DIY Detailing’s product. I would clean it with their 256 to 1 dilution using one of their suggested brushes, or a folded microfibre towel with a very light touch (and many passes). I would then dry it with another microfibre towel that has longer strands.

When the green ooze starts following you around the yard you have a problem. Pretty impressive.

My guess is hot water and some gentle scrubbing will do the job, but I’d turn the unit off and perhaps electrical tape over the switches etc. on the bottom just in case. Maybe a toothbrush might help most of it.

A small spray bottle with 15% clorox bleach and the rest water. Spray that lightly and use a soft cloth (or paper towel) to wipe it clean. It may take take 4 or 5 tries to make it work. For the Air Gap. . .just spray the mixture on the bottom. . .but Do Not rub or wipe it (as @sunny ) suggested above.

Take a damp paper towel and wipe in-between each of the levels of the radiation shield (I call that “Tempest Floss” because it’s kinda flossing teeth!) The damp paper towel will help remove dust, dirt and any debris that in-between the “louvers”. . .like bugs or spiders. Also spray the mixture on the “top cap” and around edge then wipe it with a damp paper towel.

I have restored a couple of my old devices that way to where they could be classified as “in Very Good Condition”. . .not Mint. . .but Pertnear close!
