Solar Panel Power for SKY - Now Shipping

Yep, same here. And yes, I changed my mind after I noticed the shipping had almost halved from the first day I checked it :+1:

Edit: And at least you can pay the customs fee online now and still have them deliver - makes paying the £8 for the pleasure a bit more bearable, unlike before where you had to go and pay and collect and still fork over £8 for their “handling” fee!

Your Royal Mail is a Royal Pain.

Ouch! That’s a bit frustrating… I had to pay $24 for shipping, and now it looks like @WFmarketing have reduced it to only $15.

Too bad they don’t drop-ship from China. It’s super cheap to many countries.

Solar power for Sky - will this work on the Air as well? Or does it deliver too much juice?

Appreciate the input, but that’s not what I asked.

No, you didn’t. [Deleted content so as not to offend the overly sensitive]

Not sure its fair to have a go at Gary to be honest. He did take time to give you an answer, perhaps just not the direct one you were looking for.

My view would be the solar will not work, not only for the reasons Gary mentioned but also the different battery requirements - as you say, too much juice.

This is purely my observation based on experience.

The voltage requirements for the Air and Sky are basically the same. 3.0 to 3.6Vdc. The current requirements are somewhat similar. The Sky has double cells to provide higher capacity as the Sky takes 20 sets of readings per minute whereas the Air takes only one reading per minute. Add additional readings to the Air for each lightning strike.

So, the bottom line is, yes. The panel will power the Air but will it maintain a charge? I don’t know and as far as I know, no one has tested it.

I have an additional solar panel waiting at my house so when I return from the land of Hot and Wet I will attach the panel to the Air and test if the ambient light is enough to keep the battery charged.

We know the max operating voltage of the Sky is 3.8Vdc. For the Air we have been told the operating range for 2.4 to 3.6Vdc.

Only testiing will tell.

Until now I know no-one, who has seen SOL Voltages (much?) higher then 3,62 V.

That’s good because anything above 3.8 could damage the Sky.

Hi @BuckeyeRay . The Solar Panel accessory will work on the AIR. Although it doesn’t make a ton of sense given three things:

  1. AIR is specifically designed to be placed in full shade. (no sun to power the solar panel)
  2. AIR consumes far less power and can last 1yr++ even on alkaline batteries.
  3. AIR is typically located in an easily accessible location (not up on the roof), making battery swap simple and more cost efficient.

If you want to use a solar power accessory on your AIR, go for it. But we’d suggest simply using AA batteries.

Thanks - I’m on my 2nd set of batteries, this time with the kick butt Energizers. I was just wondering about creating a wired connection between the Air and SPA with the Air inside my Stevenson screen and the panel outside. It was just a thought experiment.

If your Sky is near to your Air perhaps a wire to run them both in parallel might work.
cheers Ian

Thanks guys, mine arrrived yesterday.

Cheers

Just installed my Solar Panel! Well designed and seems to be working great so farimage

By way of a feature request, it would be a nice bonus if the battery card indicated charging/discharging and maybe fully charged.

Thanks WeatherFlow and well done!

Ouch!

I’ve been stung for £19.80 customs charge for shipping to UK. Odd really as I wasn’t charged any import duty at all when I originally bought the Weather Flow station (Sky + Air)

That was because the shipment was done from China and the forwarder was able to handle that (hence the fees were paid upfront from the sum you paid for the station)

Today this isn’t true. Panels are send from the US and I guess there is no margin left to handle the fees this time. Plus it is different from country to country etc … logistically a nightmare

That’s exactly what I had to pay for import into the UK as well. WeatherFlow stated quite clearly that we’d have to pay the import duties, so we can’t really complain.

What has really bugged me though is that they reduced the postage fee from $24 to $15 sometime after announcing that the SPA was available for purchase. It seems that if you purchased early to support a great company and product, you got stung for extra postage!

I expected to have to pay something but was a little surprised at how much - £8 “handling fee” too.:astonished:
