Ventilated shield # 2 I built for a friends air and a pic of inside showing fan, air holder,
and dual air flow design.
His stations (2905) daily high temps have been higher than mine,
My stations (3132) daily highs have been within 1 degree F to the nearby official site
here in south east Virginia (USA)
I will be observing his readings and it will be interesting to see the results.
Installed it today and so far his temp is within .2 F of mine
His air, station (2905) does need a - 16% humidity offset.
Wonderful. Thatās a great looking sheild.
Is there any data on how much thermal energy is passed through? Light it self does very little heating. I wish I had access to a physics lab so I could go do some controlled testing.
A simple non-contact infrared pyrometer would surely tell the truth without needing a physics lab. Unfortunately, mine is in the center console of my race car right now, locked in the hauler where I canāt get at it without winching the car outā¦
That would work, as long as you arenāt measuring surface temp of the coroplast, but I was thinking more on the lines of a temperature probe and recording temperature change over time. I ordered two Air & Sky units so I might experiment a little with them to see how they react.
Someone please check my math. If the inside surface temperature of the coroplast is not equal to the outside ambient temperature, then the shield isnāt performing as well as it couldā¦
You would want something inside the coroplast to measure the temperature on, not the coroplast it self. The coroplast will conduct some heat and some of it will radiate to the inside and some of it will heat the air inside. The reason you wouldnāt want a temperature measuring instrument against the coroplast is you want to take advantage of the insulative properties of the air against this radiated heat and you want the convection properties of the air to move the warmer air up and out before it has a chance to influence the temperature of the instrument. If the temperature rise of the instrument is less than the error in measurement of the instrument then the shield is doing its job adequately.
If you were to use a non-contact surface temperature device like you propose, then place an object inside the coroplast device and measure the surface temperature of that.
Update on ventilated shield # 2 I built and installed for friends air.
Mid afternoon temps exact. Light variable winds. Stations are 3 miles apart.
Underground screenshoot shows my station, circle, and cursor, pointing at friends station.
Very pleased with results.
All the stations indicating temps 87 88 93 etc. are not correct.
How do you know they are not correct? depend on what? to decide the stations around you is not accurate.
5/11, station indicating 93 had high temp of 96.6 mine and friends station high temp was, 84.6
5/12, station indicating 93 had high temp of 101.4 mine 91.8, friends 92.7.
station is reading 10 high, why? I would say improper shielding.
friends air was doing the same thing, only 5 high.
His air is in the same shield as mine now, and now his temps are ± 1 of mine.
In the beginning I thought you determined that by using psychrometer or some will calibrated instruments, you should use some of these method to be sure if your station have the right measurement or the stations around you have the right one.
A quick photo of a work in progress to build a simple 3D printable shield for the air.
Itās a first take and just working on a post mount⦠if people are interested I can upload it to thingiverse once itās done.
A quick update - added an extra middle section and improved so itās no longer āwonkyā. Itās been spray painted and is now installed to see how it does.
I will sort out the files and upload to thingiverse in case anyone else wants to make one.
Andy
I have uploaded all my files to Thingiverse - there is also a blog post on the shield at:

Hope people find it usefulā¦

@andyhudsonsmith nice!
What are the expected costs for printing such a thing?
I donāt have a printer, but have to offer someone some (I hope)
Cura estimates approx £10 in PLA - so 13 US or 12 Euro - only a rough guide though as i did not monitor it while printing. My hunch is its a little less.
Andy
@andyhudsonsmith some pictures show 5 middle segments, the final is with 6, correct?
Hi - The final print used 5 with mine - but i was not using the clip on base as i swapped it with my sky for a screw mount.
So with the base its most likely 6 - i have a replacement Air arriving next week as my humidity is faulty so can confirm when i install it,
Andy
Hi - just installed my new Air (performing well!) and its 5 for the middle segmentsā¦
Let me know if you need any help if you print it,
Andy
Iāve asked around for prices.
Some think they could ask the jackpot
