UV seems too high or too low (solved with auto-calibration CL system)

,

are you sure the solarrad can be higher as 600 W ? I ve installalled a script on my homeserver http://apeldoorn.ddns.net/sol/ the middle tab gives solarrad max on a given day for you lat and longitude , i m not sure the calculations are good just grabbed it from the web a few years ago you can fill out your location in long lat

Solar Radiation is calculated from Illuminance.

I will check it out.
But I compare my readings with the surrounding stations. There are multiple Vantage Pro 2 stations around here that give reading above 700 W/m2.

But, sure they can also give the wrong measurements. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks I had seen that too but was wondering if that’s correct I’ve no other sources to verify unfortunately.

Cumulus V1.94 for windows software has a built in option to display a graph for max solaradition based on this page (Ryan-Stolzenbach) excel spreadsheet availble https://ecology.wa.gov/Research-Data/Data-resources/Models-spreadsheets/Modeling-the-environment/Models-tools-for-TMDLs
The generated graph by cumulus is close to my script mentioned before and does not exceed 700 W/m2 in March maybe it has too do with the cloudreflections and high UV as mentioned before …

That would be the only thing I could think of right now. Reflection.

Will gonna look into my Sky data to check the clear days we had in the end of February.

Edit : checked the data of the Sky back then.

Perfectly around 410 W/m2 at its maximum.
However, when you zoom in on the graph on days with clouds, much higher spikes are visible. That could indeed be the reflection, or a graph scaling bug.

When I zoom out and watch it per day, it looks like the solar radiation is perfect for begin March. Around 500 W/m2

Except that the solar radiation value has nothing to do with the UV reading.

with all the rain lately it might also be a droplet on your sky acting as a lens

The UV readings of the Sky are to low now.
I thought the auto calibration cycle would kick in. But not at my station I think.

On clear days it reads a maximum of 5, when it should be around 7 in this time of year.

Last two days UV readings were right on spot. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:.
Great.

Mine has been whack a doodle high. UV readings of 20 and above, with one close to 30, are common. I recently got a replacement Sky unit and I’m not sure if that’s when the elevated readings began.

Everyone in our area has been incinerated. We’re waiting it out in our bomb shelter.

Mine’s been reading around 3 or 4 points high for a while now. Indexes in Ohio typically around maybe 8 or so on a clear day, but not the 11 or 12s the Sky has been reporting. 50 miles north, Columbus reported a high of 9.2 today, the Sky reported 12 here.

your not alone mine is unusable last month or so yet still in same position it was many months or last couple years .took it down nothing obvious though I question the diffuser as it cant cope with overcast periods and sun reflecting off those breaks in the clouds . ive seen some unrealistic spikes upto 13 ,max here this time of year is in the region of 9 though 10 is possible .my davis uv module doesnt suffer these extreme spikes under those conditions however that cost more than a complete weatherflow package so its unfair to compare but the sudden spikes in recent months could be another calibration issue .best practice if not used already would be use an average 5-10 minute reading for the output…

So it looks like a calibration was applied about an hour ago, as my UV dropped from 15.4 at 9:30am to a far more reasonable 6.7 about an hour later (no change in sky conditions). I’m not sure if this was tech support intervening or if the Sky did a calibration. Fess up guys, who did it.

Hi @vidguy7, thanks so much for the report…you found a bug! When your replacement SKY was brought online, it got a calibration from the old SKY when obviously it should be starting fresh. We got rid of that old calibration which should make values from your new SKY look much better now, and are working to fix that bug when devices are replaced. Let us know if you see anything else.
