WeatherFlow PiConsole - Archive

On Windows you have to manually download the zip file I’m afraid. Make sure you don’t delete the .ini file when you replace the existing files.

I’m going to look at how easy it is to use a virtual machine to run the console on Windows. If it works, you should then be able to use the same commands that you can use on a Raspberry Pi to install/update.

nice to see it asks if yes/no you want to update the other packages of the pi, at least you can choose.

upgrade only ran once when choosing to update the pi software with the script.

last command to start the panel worked and did upgrade the config file etc

pi@WF_console:~ $ wfpiconsole start
New version detected. Updating user configuration file.....
    Adding lightning panel (default): 1
    Updating version number to: v2.6

that runs nice, but I think this command basically starts a second session of the script. I saw the new screen etc but I ended it by ctrl x and instantly the old screen popped from underneath. Hence I simply initiated a reboot and now the new panel is visible and most probably only 1 instance is running.

on a windows system the time since last strike seems a little buggy, it will go from <1 to 23H 59M then back to <1. Not sure what is going on with that.

Thanks for the heads up. What is your station number? I’ll try and see what is going on.

EDIT: I’ve spotted a bug :bug: in the code that may well have been the reason for the odd behavior. I don’t have time to push a fix this evening, but I will try and get it updated in the next day or two. Thanks for the sharp eyes!

after day running I now see the wind square flicker when the arrow runs around, and sometimes we get a black square instead the circle etc. No special load on the pi (+/- 0.3)

Seems redrawing can’t keep up.

Yea I’ve seen this problem once or twice as well. I think it is due to a shortage of graphics memory. One thing to try would be to completely power down to the Pi (including unplugging) to fully flush the RAM. The other option is to increase the amount of memory available to the graphics card in raspi-config under Advanced → Memory split (Raspberry Pi Documentation - Configuration).

setting 128 and rebooting, see if that will go better over time. Though if it is a memory leak, sooner or later …

If it is due to memory leak, I don’t think the leak is coming from the PiConsole. If it were, then I would expect the weird flickers to appear more regularly, and after a set period of time since the Pi was rebooted. This doesn’t seem to be the case though. Instead they seem to appear infrequently, and with no set pattern. My thinking is that something else in the Pi has suddenly started taking more graphics memory than usual, and this is causing problems with the PiConsole. Let me know how you get on though - I am happy to do more digging if needs be.

Hi all,
Is there any way to select which panels to display.
I’d like the rain and lightning and don’t realy need the forecast.
Oh and I don’t have a touchscreen so I can’t access any buttons on the screen.
Maybe through the ini file?
Thanks,
Chuck

@peter

I’m having the same problem with the Rain/Lightning panels - on my large monitor display. Because I don’t have a touchscreen on that monitor, I have no easy way to switch panels. For some reason, it is currently displaying the Lighting panel.

I’m wondering if you can enable a ‘key’ to toggle those popups or panels? I have noticed that there is an ‘esc’ -key to exit.

I would also prefer that the Lighting panel replace the Forecast - but I know those kinda things are personal preference.

Just my two cents…

EDIT: I do have a mouse enabled, however there is no pointer - so it makes it difficult or impossible to use.

@chuckmc and @tcichowicz I hear you! I hadn’t considered the implications of not having access to the buttons at the bottom of the screen. I have long thought about making the panel selection dynamic, so will have another look at this. I know it will require a large re-write of the layout code so it won’t happen overnight, but bear with me.

@tcichowicz the lightning panel is showing because it detected a lightning strike. There is a toggle for this in the .ini file. Just change the ‘LightningPanel’ key to 0 and restart the console. The rain panel will show again, and the lightning panel will not open automatically when a strike is detected.

I guessed it wouldn’t be an easy fix. Thanks for looking at it.
In the meantime, can you have it toggle between the 2 (lightning and rain)?
Maybe at 30 sec or a minute?
Thanks Again!

@peter

Thanks for the info Peter. I was wondering why my Rain Panel disappeared. I’ll make that modification in the ini file.

No rush on any changes. I can just relocate my 7" wfpiconsole for now. We’re coming into the rainy season here in Florida, so having both Lightning & Rain data is nice to have.

16 days later and the pi is still running smooth … seems setting the graph memory solved it

Hi,
I’ve just been trying to install the Weatherflow PiConsole on my Raspberry Pi, but it gets stuck when trying to install autobahn(twisted). Any ideas, I’m using a full copy of Raspian and have tried on a 3A and 3B+.

David

Hi David,

Thanks for checking out the PiConsole! What error do you see when trying to install autobahn[twisted]? Can you cut/paste the exact message here to help work out what the problem is?
Cheers!

Great! Glad to hear it

@chuckmc I think I am going to hold off on a toggle for the time being. I’m making good progress on the dynamic layout, so am going to focus on that!

Hi Peter,

Here is a photo of Raspberry Pi desktop showing where the installation stops with an error. There is a lot more text after.
I used the command ```
curl -sSL https://peted-davis.github.io/wfpiconsole | bash

Thanks.

David.

I think there is a formatting error on your post. I can’t see the picture. Sorry!
