Battery insertion diagrams for Air and Sky (NOT Tempest)

The AIR & SKY devices require AA batteries. We strongly recommend using Energizer Ultimate Lithium (not alkaline, not lithium ion or other rechargeables) as they perform much better in outdoor environments. Always use fresh batteries from the same pack to ensure optimal performance.

AIR requires four (4) AA batteries.

  1. Twist off the bottom cover of AIR.
  2. Open the battery compartment.
  3. Slide four AA batteries into the battery compartment. Make sure the batteries are inserted in the correct direction with the negative end touching the springs.
  4. Close the battery door. The LED/button should light up briefly, then go out.
  5. Replace the bottom cover by aligning the grooves and twisting clockwise until the base locks into place.

SKY requires eight (8) AA batteries.

  1. Twist off the pole mount of SKY (if attached).
  2. Open the battery compartment.
  3. Slide eight AA batteries into the battery compartment. All batteries in the SKY should face the same direction with the positive ends pointing towards the battery door.
  4. Close the battery door. The LED/button should light up briefly, then go out.
  5. Replace the pole mount.

Battery Level Indicator
You can check the battery level of AIR & SKY by viewing the status report for your station: In the Smart Weather App, go to Settings > Stations > (choose a station) > Status

The Smart Weather app can display the remaining battery voltage in each AIR & SKY on the main “card” view. To enable a battery indicator display, go to Settings > Stations > (choose a station) > Advanced > Enable Battery Card.

Out of interest, what’s the minimum voltage required for operation of the AIR and SKY? This post AIR Power Supply Voltage Operating Range - #13 by eric suggests 2.4 v for AIR, is it the same for SKY?

@peter For AIR, at approx 2.4V the lightning detector will disable (because it requires more power) while the other functions will continue to report until the level drops under ~2.0V. SKY will operate down to about 2.0V. Incidentally, the power curves for lithium batteries tend to perform above ~2.7V for a remarkably long time, then when they start to fade, the drop off is quite sudden.
