New tempest owner here. I live on the slope of a ridge that’s open 180 degrees to the South and wind in a storm typically comes from the South. I have read about placement and understand higher and avoiding obstacles is important. For now, since it was easy, I installed this at the peak of my roof, facing the open valley. While I expect imperfect wind due to being close to the roof line, I was surprised to see relatively low readings, with a max gust of 23 last night (while I had furniture blown off my deck and the house was shaking).
Is it worth installing on a 6-10ft pole above the chimney? I can do it…just want to make sure it’s worth the effort. Any advice appreciated. One thing I wondered is how “instantaneous” the algorithm is - is there any averaging? If I feel an extremely high but short very gust, is that picked up by the ultrasonic sensor?
Here’s my station: Tempest
Here’s an additional photo (as a new user, I could only post one)
You’re about 45 miles NNW of Tempest° Headquarters at Santa Cruz! IF you want to keep this device location. . .you could try (I’ve done this so I know it works!) to use a 4-foot piece of PVC to extend the height of the Tempest° device. . .that way there is no major relocation required.
I used a piece of PVC that was just slightly bigger than the diameter of the pole on the Universal Mount. I fit the PVC over the top of the Universal mount. . . then wrapped white-colored duct tape around the bottom of where the PVC fits over the Universal pole in order to increase its height by a couple of feet (because the pole of the Universal Mount is kinda tooo short just by itself.)

Here’s my version. The Tempest° on the left has the “PVC Extender” with an adapter fitted to hold the two together. For height greater than “Paver Patio” level. . .wrap some duct tape to both poles to have it “Snug Tight” to prevent it from being damaged by winds at that height. I don’t have much wind on the Paver Patio. . .I can sacrifice strong winds for the advantage of “easy access” to both Tempest° devices.
