Sky - solar panel - overcast days

Have my new Sky and SPS running for a couple of days now.

The sun is shining bright on the SPA. But strange thing is… I don’t see the voltage go up in my graph. It’s 8 degrees Celsius outside.

Edit… It’s going up now with the speed of light.

My Sky has had battery problems since late November. Today I brought the unit inside. There does not appear to be any water damage. I am charging under a bright light and will put back outside but I am not optimistic that it lasts more than a couple days (its come back twice on its own just to stop a short time later). I’ll also turn on power save mode.

Do you guys recommend batteries or an RMA if it goes out again? How many days should I get in a cold/low light environment with the solar unit?

I would put batteries in it if I were in your situation. I just had a second of my SPAs give out on me last night. It did have water intrusion and I’m thinking that, given no corrosion, maybe the moisture is effecting the temperature measurement giving the circuitry a false sense of being colder than it actually is. If this is the case then it won’t charge or supply power to the SKY. Given that the SKY can run down to around 2.2V it seems like a SPA made with an LTO battery and no temperature compensation might be the answer to the issues we are having.

Mine died so for the winter I will use the battery option.

ALWAYS report hardware failures to WF. They’re very good about working the problem with you.

But sure, batteries for the winter are one option always.

Then why are you charging your customer for shipping when clearly this is a design flaw & you guys should stand behind your product. 60 days after purchase, 2 failures then 1 shipped under warranty never arrived. Bottom line this would not be necessary if your product worked in the Northern Cold area of the US. I’ve been with out wind rain reports since 12/18/19.

I have another comparable system over 4 years old that is wireless & no matter how cold, it hasn’t failed.

I tried weather flow as I liked the idea of no mechanical wind cups. Bad choice on my part. Won’t make that mistake again. Sorry but I expected better than this.

So I’m stuck with this broken system until I can get up on the roof & place batteries in the Sky unit! Tough to do in Erie, PA.

Totally bummed out on this purchase.

Your lucky, mine only lasted about 60 days! My other station is an Ambient 1002 WS & came with a nice thin color display. Love it! Been over 4 yrs & no issues. Got it after my Davis vantage pro gave up the ghost. Until Davis updates the crappy display I’ll stick with Ambient. Best of luck with you and your stations.

alternatively  a humorous view alternative to batteries to keep your solar fully functional …if you don’t have a sensor of humor look away…however be patient I hear a solution is in the works …but in all honesty anyone has the right the feel somewhat disillusioned when a replacement does exactly the same been there more than once… don’t forget that annoying fact its the weather that causing these issues …isnt that ironic ! ?

 But shouldn’t the box say “Designed in the USA, Made in China?” Or take a cue from Apple and say, “Designed in Florida, Made in China.”

So the Sky has gone out again, it lasted 21 days.

As per previous, I charged it under a high intensity light for about six hours and then returned outdoors and set it in powersaving mode. Voltage was at or near its max. Though it has been cold, temps have trended a bit above average so there have been a few days over 32 so that some charging could/should have happened.

I’m pretty disappointed as the ‘will last 30 days even without solar charging’ is complete bs and it seems there are enough owners in similar situation that at the least they should remove that claim.

Will report now via support ticket and go from there.

Hey Birdfun

21 days in cold conditions isn’t too bad already. Can you share you station ID. I could have a closer look at it. Thanks

Hi Folks
I have had a failure too
Station 5482 in west of Ireland.
It has been overcast here but not totally.
Temp does not go below zero here for long.
Sky died when I was away on holidays in January.
Took it in and got it going with some batteries.
Reinstalled it outdoors but it stopped sending data again yesterday
Last voltage was 3.17.
I will take it in again this evening and see if it will restart.

Was it running on batteries recently or again on SPA ? Also when bringing in shake it a bit and try to hear if by any chance there some water in the dome …

Let us know

Hi Eric
I have the Sky indoors now.
No obvious water in the dome, just a slight rattle.
I tried pushing the button with a key with the SPA attached
and did not get a light.
I get 3.25 on a meter across the SPA terminals with it detached.
I inserted batteries and sky restarted.
Removed batteries and refitted SPA.
Sky sitting on a shelf in intermittent sunshine (lucky to get any at all in Ireland…)
Voltage now shows 3.57 in the app. Sky shows online.
I could get a wind reading by blowing into the Sky with batteries.
Crap, its gone offline again eventhough status says online in the app.
There is a purple light flashing every three seconds.
Air has stopped reporting now. Showing online.
I will try a reboot of everything.
Charlie

If you get a purple LED, try resetting the device (press and hold LED button until it flashes). Then re-pair it to the Hub through the app.

Finally got it to flash green with the SPA attached.
Its paired now and showing 2.88v.
I have a bright work led on it. Dunno if that will charge it.
I will run it indoors for a while to see what happens.
Air reporting seems to be dropping in and out.
At the moment it does not show pressure.
It has 3.3v according to app.

Is it possible to restart the Air? Open the battery compartment, wait 10 seconds and then close it. It should reconnect directly to hub and send data again. Not sure why you don’t get any pressure reading, maybe a reboot can get it back to normal …

I really hope that black cat will move to the neighbours :no_mouth:

Air now back showing pressure.
Maybe I did not leave it open for long enough.
I will run both indoors for a few days and see what happens.
Big wind forecast for the weekend so I will deploy Sky for that.
Cat person here. Black lad stays on moon :smile_cat: :smile_cat:

Fortunately we don’t generally get below freezing, but the solar Sky is showing some significant voltage drops in the soul-crunching gloom of this grey-to-black Seattle winter. Voltages down to around 2.9V on some of the more consistently yecccccch days.

My Air is on the blink again.
It shows battery of 3.18 but no pressure or temp.
Rebooted all, reconnected, waited with batteries out
uninstalled app, reinstalled without success.
It is showing online Sensor Status=all failed.
Time is correct so it is online. RRSI -34
Any ideas?
