Hey all, I’ve got two Tempest stations. One at my house and one about 2 miles away at my office. Generally they give me basically the same readings. But the one at my house seems to report much higher humidity for some reason. Today its 10%-15% higher then the station at my office. I started looking into it the other day when I noticed the station at my house was reporting 100% humidity (it wasn’t raining), and I thought that was odd. I was very humid outside, but I’ve never seen it that high. Now, the station at my house is several years old at this point and the one at my office is newer. It’s still over a year old but I only opened it and installed it a few weeks ago.
There is no firm correlation between near surface relative humidity and precip. If the relative humidity is at or near 100% there is a good chance for fog (but even that is not a guarantee).
Sorry for being pedantic.
As far as the discrepancy, humidity can differ a fair amount in 2 miles, especially if the terrain varies (a station near a river or a swamp will likely be higher than one two miles from the moisture sorce, for example).
I assume you checked the sensor status being reported and there is no issue thre?
Thanks for the reply. In checking other stations in my area, it looks like my older one at my house that is reading high is actually more in line with the other stations in the area.
The even stranger thing is the one at my office that’s showing lower humidity is 10 feet from the water (my office is at a marina).
It’s really not a big deal, I’ll keep an eye on it over some time and see what happens. I’ve only started watching the discrepancy over the past couple days.
If I remember correctly, humidity sensors are not very accurate near the extreme values.
Also the new one, probably will auto-recalibrate after a while
