Thanks for the precision. I don’t mind it getting green as long as it does the job.
by the time the metal is corroded away your unit probably is old enough that you have replaced it. btw i think my spikes have a layer of chroom
hopefully the birds don’t find it to be nice scaffolding like they did with the spikes (long, thin) I added to keep them from building nests on the floodlights!
Only us Canucks know what Canadian Tire is or does :). (A tire place that also sells toilet paper now, go figure)
Is that why they have so many ads on Space channel Oh I guess they changed it to CTV been long time since we watched it down here in Indiana
If you have the 500 watt Halogen bulbs in there that looks like it might be a fire hazard it also bake that poop on good. What the he@@ kind of bird made that nest ?
@fishrman they have to pay for the purchase of space. CTV acquired Space a few years ago and that’s why i’m not watching it live anymore. last time I check it was 6 min show 6 min ads. Anyway back to our daily scheduled program. I will try to make a bird repellent to attach to the Tempest for those who also have a 3d printer I will try to share it on Thingiverse. Don’t hold your breath though I have another one to do for my vantage pro before that. I don’t have any bird issue at the moment on the Tempest but the rain gauge of the vantage is taken as a toilet for some birds. Keep you posted.
I spent a good portion of my youth living in the snow belts south of Buffalo, around the time that y’all went metric. Since we used to watch a lot of Canadian TV from Hamilton and Toronto, I vividly remember the transition in the TV weather forecasts and still wish that we had made the jump at the same time.
Anyway, I played hockey, spent many summer weekends in Ontario, and know every word to “Oh Canada.” The only thing stopping me from applying for Canadian citizenship is dining at Tim Horton’s…
Lol Tim Hortons can either be great for your sweet tooth … or a tummy ache.
If you lived in the snow belt, you know what a storm is all about. Wish there was a measure for snowfall, but this would take a heater to melt it yada yada.
a few weeks ago I came to learn about these laser distance measurement devices. cheap and can be connected to an ardiuno. Perhaps if you point them down, you could measure the height of the snow https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000435134108.html. I never used one, so it is just an idea.
Another way might be just to put a ruler vertically into the ground and seeing how much snow has called.
Not high tech but the ‘ol fashioned way always works
you must have a manual rain gauge
I have a Davis Vantage Pro 2 with the heated rain bucket for winter but it’s worth what it’s worth. I can’t really trust it for snow accumulations during winter. Snow is too light. If there is so much as a wind during a snowfall the snow will go elsewhere and not in the rain bucket. You better measure the snow by hand with a wood surface placed high enough and a ruler.
We had four feet of level snow one evening. Good for the rare two-hour delay from school the next morning.
There’s a few DIY ultrasonic and laser snowboard setups on WXforum.net, if you want to take a look at them. I have an idea for an automated snowboard that may be suitable for unattended commercial operation, but have not built a prototype or filed for a patent yet…
Interesting ! (filling in the remaining 20 characters
Yes it is!!!
. . . . . . . …
House wren—yep, def a fire hazard, which is why the bird spikes “experiment”. So far I haven’t needed spikes on the Tempest, but there’s a spinny cup anemometer close to it that might be enough to disuade perching.
Big old black snake take care of that problem
I hope these work, I just ordered them. I had to look on the forums for a solution because these tiny birds keep landing my my Tempest for the past 2 weeks and they cause the rain alert to trigger in the app. It’s rather annoying but I am also worried about damage long term due to this.
FYI for WeatherFlow folks, is there any way if the haptic sensor just has a sudden load it would ignore this as rain? If it is constant, yeah rain, but a sudden load, bird or random object hitting it.
I saw where @jameslfranklin showed a picture of a bird right in the middle. I assume maybe I can bend the spikes in to prevent that? Has that worked for others?
Strangely I never had issues with my older station that had wind cups. I assume the spinning cups likely scared them off.
