This is great, I’ve been looking for a new mast to mount my Tempest higher. It shows this is 1 and 1/3 diameter. Specs listed for Tempest show the max outer diameter for a mast is 1.315 inches. Will it work with Tempest?
He and many of us wouldn’t recommend it if it didn’t work.
It is a very snug fit. On one of my old Sky units, I had to completely unscrew the clamping ring/nut, slip it onto the mast, then slip the clamping fingers on the mount over the mast before screwing the ring/nut back on…
Since bringing my old station back to life (last was working September 2020). I finally got it mounted again at this new house. Not a lot of options for placement here due to a very small backyard.
I had my Tempest at my old house at 27 feet on my roof. At my new home, it’s about 4 feet off the ground. When I purchase a new fence post, it’ll be placed at 6 feet.
New setup from Florence AL
Used vinyl coated top rail fence post from Lowes and some rubber plumbing collars so I would not have to drill into my new aluminum fence.
“Sunrise on the Tempest”
Just set this up a couple of days ago in Hendersonville NC, replacing my Davis Vantage Vue. Installation was a piece of cake and no problem connecting it to Weather Underground. Interesting how the haptic sensor reported precipitation the other day when it was sleeting, and the tipping bucket sensors around me showed nothing.
Looks like a tree growing out of the light sensor. ![]()
Yeah it was just the angle of the pic lol
Hello! Thank you for being able to post. After researching for my first PWS, I decided to save up for a Tempest. I temporarily mounted the unit atop a backyard fence post for a few weeks until an available fair-weather day came along. Yesterday, I installed an antenna chimney mount kit (from Amazon) along with a galvanized chain-link fence top rail (dia.1-3/8" x lgth.10’-6’’ from Menards) then moved the unit from the fence post to the pole mount. I used a 4’ spirit level for plumbing the mounted pole by making slight bracket bends where needed. With Tempest now above our home’s 2nd story roof ridge level, wind speeds definitely started showing an increase in accuracy with this elevated full exposure. I really look forward to enjoying the Tempest!
Edit/additional: Our chimney is not used, so no thermal effects from it.
Nice install Mike! You will love your Tempest. I just switched as well and I am extremely pleased with mine!
i had same setup for 3 years. problem is when your tempest goes out in the winter and u need to hit the button on the unit your screwed
I utilized a 10 foot section of 1" metal conduit and a $7 antenna bracket set (all less than $30) for my installation. I had to find an area close enough to the house but outside of the Red Cedar wind break for installation. It is positioned high enough off of the metal roof line to minimize radiant heat from the structure.
Very nice install! That should work very well!
Wind/rain reports should be interesting!
Let’s fix that… false rain due to wind oscillation.

Looks great though!
Unfortunately, most of us have to deal with asphalt, concrete, structures, trees, valleys, hills, obstacles, and for those of us without a mesh wifi system, still have to locate the tempest unit close enough to the hub to maintain a decent signal. That’s why a majority of the NWS weather stations are located at airports… no obstacles.
Fortunately, I can quickly access the unit despite its chimney location. As you predicted… it quit sending data a couple of weeks ago. That day, I loosened the 2 clamps and took the pole and unit down, reset it, and remounted/realigned it to north using witness marks on the pole and my phone’s compass. Has been working fine since… thankfully!
