Photos of Tempest Installations :tempest:

Hi everyone…I wanted to share photos of my two Tempests. The one on the garage is 28 feet off the ground and about 6’ off the roof. This unit is from 2019 and has worked flawlessly. The second unit is mounted at the peak of my home. I have two so that I can measure the difference in wind mph. There is about 75’ of distance between the two and both are 28’ in the air. Both units are dead on as far as rain and wind speeds. It’s pretty amazing though at times how they each can measure different winds gusts depending on the wind direction and flow. At the moment I have both sensors on one hub. I purchased one slightly used and I will set my other sensor on the second hub separately.

Why set up a second station rather than just keep things the way you have it now? Each hub can support something like 16 devices so it isn’t like you’re likely to run out of connection options.

Hi David…Thanks for your reply. Currently my main station is on the account and the second station is the secondary. Thus I can not set up 2 separate units on Weather Underground. From whatTempest customer service told me it’s one or other. Unless I misunderstood them?

Ok, that makes sense.

I installed my second Tempest sensor 48 feet above ground level on the center mast of my rooftop antenna farm for an unobstructed view of wind speed/direction. An adapter was required due to the different mast diameters. I was concerned that vibration from wind might affect the rain sensor but I have only seen one minor glitch, less than 1/100 of an inch, in wind gusts up to 21 MPH. I speculate that the mass of the antennas may lower the resonant frequency on the larger diameter main mast. I’m going to keep the first sensor 12 feet above ground level, shielded by the house to the northwest, as a reference. What a difference it makes to see accurate wind measurements!

Awesome set up. What software is that for your display. Its pretty cool.

Looks like Weather Display - the Weather Station software to me.

It is Weather Display. I downloaded yesterday for $30.99 and have no clue on how to add the Tempest Weather Station. Joined their forum to get info but have not heard anything back yet. It seems it works great with Davis products and claimsit works with Tempest but could not get anything to enter into their queries so as for me I would be careful before you spend the money on the app.

Thank you for the heads up. I hope you can get it to work with Tempest.

You are quite welcome. I hate to see anyone spend money on something that may or may not work. Obviously it must work but with out clear instructions it is difficult. I believe they should have a trial download before putting out money to make sure it works. But you live and learn!

It seems pretty straightforward.

Change the parameters to match your setup and you should be good to go.

Thanks again. I appreciate what you included in your response. Good on ya!

Thank you. Yes, that’s what the software is and I am running it on a MAC using a Parallels virtual machine with Windows 10. I could not get the native MAC version to display all parameters. I love the multiple overlaid graphical parameters on the timeline to clearly see relationships between them.

One suggestion from the software author was to leave the various Tempest fields blank and only list the name of the hub. I also tried to run it with two sensors on one hub but was not able to get that to work. On my computer it crashes occasionally, usually with the wind parameters going flatline. I can usually get it going again by rebooting Parallels and the software but sometimes have to reload the software. A bit quirky but the compelling display makes it worth the effort for me.

Thanks for that info. Sounds a bit to quirky for me so it will be just a lesson learned about buying before trying. I also am on a Mac and could try windows but without solid direction it is not worth the effort for me. Maybe I will look at it again someday as I really do like the display it gives you.

Hi there! I’m a newbie to Tempest° and personal weather stations in general. As a full-time RVer, I decided to mount the PWS on my 5th wheel’s ladder. Thus far, I haven’t seen any spurious rain indications from movement or vibration.

Here’s the station, about 16 feet above ground level, atop a chain link fence top rail. I’ll remove the Tempest° and slide the mast down for travel.

I hit the one-image limitation immediately!

Here’s a close-up of the mast clamped to the ladder using hose clamps. I made the wire bracket from a clothes hanger to help when installing and removing the mast.

Nice work! You will be sure to follow the weather with that setup!

Nice. Remember to update the location in the app when you move.
