Just received my Tempest and I was thinking of placing it on the universal mount attached to the fence post circled in the image. I use the smoker maybe once or twice a month. Are there any concerns with placing it in this location? The other side of the fence is blocked by many trees and I do not want to roof mount.

I think it will be fine on the fence. It will not read temp or wind as well as if it was on a pole in a clear area but it still gives you an idea of conditions.
The higher above the fence the better to allow clear airflow.
As for the smoke drifting into the Tempest you will know the temperature is probably reading warmer if you see the smoke engulfing it.
Then there is the cleaning issue due to smoke settling on it. If you have a look after you used the smoker you might need to clean it. Otherwise the water repellant coating on the lower surface of the wind gap may loose its water repellency.
There are discussions (use the magnifying search) on how to clean it being very careful of that water repellent coating.
