I’ve been noticing lots of rain recorded lately on my Tempest at our place down on the East Cape near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Last week I headed down there to check on construction progress expecting to find everything unseasonably green. That was not to be. What I did find was that when the workers were pounding on the building the shock wave would transmit up the Tempest mounting pole and show heavy rain. So please disregard the false reports of rain at my little corner of the world until the room addition is finished!

I found multiple instances of rain being recorded when I knew there was none. After this went on for a second day I took my station down and cleaned it with compressed air. Out popped a small gecko. I think I fixed the problem.

I found I was getting false rain readings for two reasons.
-
An osprey was roosting on the weather station. Solved by stringing a 100lb test fishing line about 12 inches above the weather station, preventing the osprey from roosting.
-
Vibrations in heavy winds. Solved by replacing the PVC pipe the weather station was mounted on with a heavy Galvanized pipe (gas line) filled with sand.
I haven’t observed a single false reading since making the changes about 2 years ago.
