What’s your take on the Davis spoon? That’s sure is a big underreporting by the Tempest. Maybe CL can resolve that issue soon.
Sure hope my Tempest isn’t under reporting… Registered just over 17" in 36 hours, thanks to Long Tall Sally.
Mine could’ve over reported due to vibrations. Going to have to make some installation adjustments.
I know for sure my Tempest is under-reporting. Every rain event it is always behind my CoCoRaHS and Ambient station. During Sally, when the eyewall came over my house, the power went out at 2:05 pm. The Ambient station was registering 6.58" while Tempest had 4.77". I have no clue what the Tempest would’ve ended up with, but I imagine the total would be at least two inches behind since the Ambient station’s final amount was 11.98" for the day.
I’m near Charleston SC and reported 1.37" yesterday (9/17). NWS says 1.62 so I’m not that much lower.
Not sure on the Davis Tipping Spoon yet. Since installation, have had NO extreme rain events except the Tropical Depression Sally event. I will closely monitor with upcoming fall season extra-tropical cyclone events…
Hello, Atomic,
I am a FAA Certified Weather Observer at the Charleston International Airport / Joint base KCHS. When you say NWS rainfall reports, are you saying the NWS at KCHS location? I will be on duty tomorrow 19SEP20 and Sunday 20SEP20. I will look up the obs and determine how much rain has accumulated.

I gotcha, a very reliable source!
Tempest installed today, replacing a Davis VP2 Wireless that’s been in need of refurbishment for several years. 31ft above the ground, in Hollis, NH.
Pole mount question – Is the mount supopsed to clamp down tightly onto the mast? I’ve tightened it as much as possible. It’s semi-snug, but certainly not tight.
Im thinking my PVC is not strong enough for an extended post. Thoughts?
Just received mine last week. Completed the installation the other day and working really well so far. For reference I used this antenna mount and it’s a perfect fit!
Probably depends on how much wind you get and whether it could vibrate the Tempest off or twist it. You could put a little tape on the pole to tighten it up.
Probably depends on how tall and how much wind you get. I use an 8’ vinyl wrapped wooden closet rod.
And with tape, you can probably wrap waterproof tape around the pole and put the Tempest mount over it.
Concrete filled vinyl fence post with 1.3" OD carbon fiber tube. #2 1.25" electrical conduit standoff clamps are used to hold the tubing to the post. The top of the Tempest sit at just over 7’.
A simple installation that is effective, great looking, and a big plus is easy to get to for maintenance. Superb view!
Thanks @gizmoev - that’s what I was thinkin’. Was anxious to get down off the ladder. Guess that means another trip, up. I do hope the Tempest is reliable, as setting up this ladder and anchoring it down is a bit of a chore.
Gizmoev is right about the length of PVC your using as well as the diameter of the PVC being used. I am using an 8 foot tall, 3/4 inch black iron pipe setup that my old system was mounted on.
