Thank you @eric. How would I judge if “Tempest is high enough from the roof to avoid to much heat radiation”? I’ll check out the other topic you mention.
I did the same thing…only drilling into mortar on a fireplace to install a pole-mount for WFSKY-01 (1st generation WeatherFlow device). I have to use 2 ladders to climb up to the pinnacle of the roof (Station 2) to do a quarterly PMI (Preventative Maintanance Inspection) on the WFSKY-01 and ensure the bolts are still tightened into mortar. “Station 1” contains the Davis Vantage Vue (DVVISS) and Tempest Field Test device on two separate poles. I have a “pool ladder” right next to the poles so all I do is climb up and stand on the top shelf to do the PMIs. (Actual production “Tempest° WeatherSystem” won’t arrive until end-of-month at the earliest due to stock being backordered.)
I’ll give you metric values but usually 1,5 to 2 meters is really good as air can flow normally and radiation is not to intense. But all depends on what you can do to fix it properly.
ok good…I was looking at getting a 72 or 96 in vinyl wrapped closet rod to mount it with a tripod; my calculations make that 1.8m to 2.4m…higher if the rod is raised off the roof.
You sure you’re not going to get slightly warm readings (like 160 F) up there on a white roof in your part of the country ? Might be an interesting science project in itself…
Received Friday and now mounted. Painted 10ft long, 1" dia. galvanized pipe driven three feet in the ground (using temporary threaded cap on top for the sledge hammer impact point). Looking SW.
We’ll see, but so far the temp readings seem accurate, currently 94.8F.
Here’s mine,

I received the new Tempest on Friday and the mounting hardware this afternoon. Just got it installed on the gable end of my workshop about 2-hrs ago.
Purchased an inexpensive pair ($17) of wall mounts w/4" standout from Amazon:

The stainless pole, 53"x1-1/4" (RCA - Antnna mount) was picked up at a local Big Box store (Menards Lumber) for only $7.00.
East Troy, WI
Looking forward to being part of the community.
What’s your station ID? I’d like to check out your readings up there. I’m down south of you between Sierra Vista & Bisbee.
I live in Florida and painted a trailer roof with elastomeric paint, Cool White. When up above the roof level the heat reflected was almost unbearable. I believe you would be better off moving the unit away from the roof, even to the South edge where the reflected heat would tend to the North. Just my $0.02
I’ve never seen a dark pole mount before. Looks like Tempest was reinforced with some sort of taping for added security.
You are exactly right … the bottom part, under the base of the unit was not very tight when connected to the unit. Just wrapped it with some all weather electrical tape for to reinforce it.
Hope the warm temps won’t cause the tape to get “gooy” or sticky with the direct sunlight on it. Icky, gooy residue can be difficult to remove. . .especially on a brand new shiny, clean Tempest.
Here are some more pics of my install. I read the RSSI wrong earlier. -55 is the hub to network. Getting -70 to -60 Tempest to hub. so I should still be fine.
I will keep an eye on it. I am sure it will deteriorate after time. Hated to do it at all but it was loose enough that the unit would shake or move in higher winds, which we get pretty regularly up here.
Just installed my Tempest. Used a vent pipe mount and black powder-coated chain link fence top rail.
Hi. My station ID is 20354.
