I have started noticing that if I watch the rain amount readout during a storm and then after it has finished the rain amount will go down. Example; the other day it read .77 when it finished raining and then about 30 minutes later it was down to .53. Make it make sense please.
This is caused by the Nearcast Technology (formerly called “Rain Check” program.)
Basically. . .the “Rain Check” (Nearcast). . .seen as. . .
with a little icon in the upper right-hand corner. . .
denotes it is active and running. The “Rain Check” AI program averages precip in your area from a multitude of sources. . . surrounding Tempest sites; Storm Total Precip (STP) from Doppler Weather Radar; Satellite imagery estimates. . .and it own AI programming called Nearcast Technology.
You can “turn off” the Nearcast (Rain Check icon) by doing the following in your App. . .
Settings >> Stations >> (choose your station) >> Manage Devices >> choose your ST device >> Advanced >> second line down: Show NC Rain . . . to the far right. . .switch to the left so it is dimmed out (turned OFF).
Then next time you look at your rain. . .it will show the RAW Rain Amount as detected by the Haptic Rain Sensor atop your Tempest device. The NearCast (Rain Check) is used to “Smooth” out the data so tlhat it fits homogeniously with surrounding data. . .and not have one Tempest station sticking out like a sore thumb. i.e. have all the station rain reports be fairly similar and not have one Tempest showing 8.96" of rain. . .when surrounding stations and radar only indicated that ~1.14" of rain had fallen.
Thank you very much. That totally makes sense. I have an app called Precip. It basically shows the rain amount for your location. I’m not sure where it’s getting it’s info but it is always very close to what my PWS will read.
Just to add a little more to what @storm_tracker said, NC Rain does also include your own Tempest’s data like how long it rained. It isn’t entirely using other data outside your Tempest.
