Temperature and RH Sensor Failure

On July 4th both above mentioned sensor failed. Created a support ticket for assistance. They sent my Tempest a remote reboot command, but the temperature and RH sensors still reporting obviously incorrect values. They recommended a manual rebooting of the device. They said if that did not do the trick either, the Tempest will need to be replaced. I opted to ordering a completely new system. A new Hub wouldn’t be necessary as my current one works just fine, but it may offer some peace of mind to upgrade it now. So my question is, I know I won’t lose historical data as you can ‘swap’ the new device in the old device’s place. If I also replace the old hub with the new one would the same hold true with the historical data? Also what are the proper steps to take when replacing one or both so as to not lose the historical data?

No. If you use the NEW hub they would send to you. . .the new Hub would create an entirely New StationID. You’d have to contact Support so that the data from old (previous) Hub could be “stitched” (merged) into the New Hub. . .but you would lose maybe a few days’ worth of data in the process. So basically. . .

  1. Merely doing a “Replace Device” preserves the integrity of the data on the previous Hub
  2. Adding a brand new Hub. . .the station and its data start all over again (from scratch); you’d have to request that the previous Hub’s data be merged into the new Hub. The old Hub’s StationID could then be deleted.

Exact same issues with mine. I moving to Ecowitt hardware. If it does not perform I’m moving on to Davis.

If anyone chooses to move on to another type of weather device and to “Load Shed” (aka get rid of) their Tempest device. . .I’d be interested in obtaining them in order to perform continual “Field Testing” experiments on them.

That’s what I thought also, but just needed some clarification. I have had no issues with my existing Hub to date so as the ole saying goes "If it’s not broken don’t fix/replace it. As mentioned I opted in getting a whole new system with the new Hub but at least I will have it in the event that my old Hub stops functioning in the future, which I do not see happening. Thanks for your help!

If you decide to get a whole new TWS (TempestWeatherSystem)…you can still use your exiting Hub (as you are doing) and save the new one in case it’s ever needed.

That’s eXactly what I did. My previous Tempest device was fine (sensor-wise). . .but it was the battery (just a large tall capacitor!) would no longer keep a charge. . .either by solar panels OR the Power Booster Accessory (PBA). With the new TWS. . .I merely did a “Replace Device” and kept it on the existing Hub since that’s where the Station History resides. The spare hub (the brand new “Purple Hub”. . .(TE-HUB)) is in the original box in case I ever need it.

I purchased a whole new TWS. and it was delivered this afternoon. My temperature & humidity sensors failed but everything else works fine. So that’s exactly what I am going to do also. as you did and keep the new purble hub in case I ever need it. It’s been raining here this afternoon with some lightning so I will switch the old Tempest Sensor with the new one first thing in the morning. So what are the exact steps in doing this so as to not lose historical data? Thanks for your help!

When you are ready. . . go to the Tempest° app. . .and be in close range to the Hub. Then. . .

  • Select Settings (gear) in Lower Right-hand portion of the App
  • Under the MANAGE tab. . .select Stations
  • Your “station” will then be visible
  • Under the DEVICE tab. . .selection your “currently installed” device ST-00#######
  • On the “Device” page…select Advanced at the bottom
  • On the "**Advanced **Page…second item from the bottom will be "Replace Device" in red lettering.
  • Select Replace Device" and you should most likely see two Tempest° devices listed; the currently attached one that has the “Temperature Failed. RH Failed” and the new replacement you just got.

Follow the instructions giving on that page. Undo the flat-base mount and switch it on when told to do so. Then Select the new replacement device ST-001######. You will be asked if you “are sure you want to replace device ST-000(old serial number Tempest°) with this one ST-001######” ? Answer Yes. After half a minute or so . .it should state something like "ST-001###### successfully replaced.,

Then exit the app on your mobile deivce. . .then. . .go back into the app on your mobile device to verify / confirm that the new Tempest° device ST-001###### is the correct device you want it to use. IF. . .by chance that didn’t take on the first round. . . repeat the steps give above and try again. I had to do this eXact same procedure about 2 hours ago to replace my Field Test Tempest° device on the paver patio with another one. Had to go thru the procedure 2 times. . .then I finally recognized the Tempest° device I wanted to be replaced

WORD OF CAUTION: In the “Advanced” tab just below the “Replace Device” in red lettering are the words “Delete All Data” in red lettering. Stay AS FAR AWAY from that tab as possible. If you Accidentally select it. . .it will CONFIRM if you want to Delete. I know all tooooo well about this! I’ve accidentally Deleted years-worth of Tempest° data by accident!. . .and I CRIED for 3 days straight!

I’m sending you a PM (PrivateMessage) via this Forum. . .so check for it in about 10 mins.

Thanks for the info. I will check my PM shortly.:sunglasses::palm_tree:

I’m quite sure the data isn’t actually deleted, it is just that the sensor connected to that data gets a new device ID so it is no longer linked. You could have contacted support and asked them to relink the data to the device. If you notice, when using the Replace Device function, the device ID stays the same, whereas when you don’t, the device gets a new device ID.
