Two Years of Uptime Club - Tempest just keeps running

I had my Tempest since the Kickstarter and looking at my status today I noticed it’s been humming along for over 2 years now. I remember installing the unit in 2020 and setting the post next to the wife’s garden. Other than some weathering of the unit it just keeps reporting its observations.

If you don’t believe me here you go :grinning:

Any recommendations on cleaning it?

I wouldn’t touch it. Go for three years !!!

“Any recommendations on cleaning it?”

For cleaning in between the radiation shields. . .I use a slightly damp paper towel. I call it “Tempest Floss”. . . .similar to flossing in between teeth. I put it up under each level of the shields and turn back & forth a few times. . .while slowly rotating the “floss” to clean all the way around in between each shield level. All 3 of my Tempests (ST devices with the Blue “North marker” and logo.) are clean and look pertnear brand new (except for some “yellowing” on the sun-facing side due to UV`s) One of my ST device is only 6 feet high. . .so it’s easy to get to. I use a “pool ladder” to reach the other two.

Good to share, nice to hear, my Tempest also does a good work, but having to add a battery backup to the device due to the many dark winter days here, and with that add-on winters are handled better - but one question - in what app, device do I find that “uptime” measure?
Otherwise, best regards from Sweden Sollentuna just north of Stockholm ST-00052992

All the best,

Bert. . .

Go to your main Tempest App on your device (either iPhone or Android). … scroll all the way down to the bottom to find this in the lower right-hand corner of that page::

Then clicking on it brings up the Status page. From there you will see important info about both your Hub device and the Tempest that is attached to it. Tempest status will be the 3rd item from the bottom. e.g. for one of my Tempest devices. . .it reads:

The “Uptime” for the Hub device will be shown at the bottom item in the first part of that top section.

I have been debating on pulling out the ladder and using some microfiber towels since paper towels have wood fibers and other chemicals to absorb water. Meguire’s car wash is safe for anything, so I hope it won’t eat though the coatings on the unit. I won’t shut it off, but I am sure it will register some rain while cleaning. I’m on vacation this week so I’ll add it to my to-do list.

I use the damp pater towels only in between the radiation shield “louvers”. for the SuperHydrophobic coating on the bottom of the air gap. . .I spray lightly with a clorox / water mixture to get rid of any “stains” that are present. Then I lightly “pinch blot” but NEVER rub on the superhydrophobic coating what-so-ever.

Came across this old thread from back in October 2021. . .about “Cleaning the Tempest”. (The print is kinda tiny. . .so click on image then zoom in to examine it better.)

Thanks for quick and clear answer storm_tracker. I can find the green online button on my iPhones (7 and X running 15.7.8) but it’s not clickable, my Tempest version is v5.10 (669). I’ll ask the guys at Tempest on that issue, they might know. Thanks again.

I have similar great experience. I have two stations with one at 798 days. It’s on the peak of my roof and not the easiest to get to so nice that it just keeps humming along.

That is because it is only clickable on the web page, not the app.

In the app, go to Settings, Stations, station name, Status.

thanks for sharing the tip. How often do you floss your tempest?

Every few days. . .but more during rainy period to get rid of dust and debris that collects / combines with the rain water. Otherwise. . .for long periods of no rain. . .usually do a rather thorough cleaning / “flossing” about one-a-week.

Sure is nice hearing about all these units going for 2 plus years. I am already on my 3rd replacement in 2 years living here in central Texas. Support has been amazing replacing these…but doubt I will get another when this one dies as my warranty period is now expired.

I am envious of TEMPEST owners running for a year or two. I own two stations, one in Brazil and the other in Miami. TEMPEST replaced the first set and two years later dead again. Tempest replaced again and 12 months later they failed. Changed the battery on one unit, but it was not power but the main board. I really enjoyed TEMPEST, but I am done. I will look at other systems, as it was simply a power issue I could handle it, but the electronics and sensors fail after too short of a life period. TEMPEST did offer a discount to purchase new equipment, but at this point it does not make sense to go with TEMPEST.
